Which was exactly the point of Geisel’s 1971 tale about the repercussions of tolerating a greedy, over-consumptive world. Get it? No trees, no oxygen? No one questions his monopolist hold on their lives, just like gas-guzzling Americans fail to question Big Oil’s slimy grip on our wallets and politicians. His name is Aloysius O’Hare (voice of Rob Riggle), a Seussian version of Donald Trump, complete with god-awful hair, who has amassed his great fortune by selling air to his oxygen-starved subjects. Apparently, the brains of the townsfolk have also become synthesized, oblivious to the dark side of a pleasant but despot society ruled by a pint-sized butterball with an acute Napoleon complex. The word rube, I believe, was invented for the denizens of this backward burgh, where fake plastic trees (sorry, Radiohead) have replaced real timber. If you care one hoot about the lemmings inhabiting the tinfoil town of Thneedville, that’s one more hoot than I cared during my entire 80-minute visit to a hermetically sealed environment as airless as it is lifeless.
